AHOPE: HIV Orphans’ Care & Support Program

$360 = Full support for child in orphanage
Traditionally in Ethiopian culture, the kinship within extended families was strong and orphans were cared for within the family. However, the increasing number of orphans and the deteriorating living standard of the Ethiopian people have created a condition where extended families are unable to provide even the minimal basic care for orphans.

$320 = One year of an orphaned child’s medical costs
With over 1 million orphans in Tanzania, many extended families are unable to afford to absorb the grandchildren or nieces and nephews that are left without a home. With limited space in orphanages, these children are often left to fend for themselves.
This project is funding the work of the TunaHAKI Centre for Child Development in Moshi, Kilimanjaro region, Tanzania. TunaHAKI Centre has identifies families that if provided with financial support and the direct payment of school fees could raise an orphan that is part of their extended family.

$30/month = provision of Antiretroviral Therapy for one HIV+ child
While it is estimated that over 120,000 children are currently infected with HIV in Kenya many of these children do not have access to live saving medication.
In fact, the Narok regional district hospital reports that in their region only 1 out of every 200 HIV+ children are currently receiving Antiretroviral Therapy (ART).
Direct Change is partnering with the Christian Partners Development Agency (CPDA) to increase the number of children in the Narok District to receive life saving medication.

Rebuilding Education in Sudan

After over two decades of a civil war that costs millions of lives, the southern Sudan is beginning to rebuild as thousands of refugees return to the region. The lack of schools and teachers in the region has kept an estimated 80% of school age children out of school. Direct Change is in the process of identifying partners to rebuild schools, train teachers and to assist in the redevelopment of the educational system throughout southern Sudan.
While most Direct Change projects focus on ongoing support, the situation in this region requires the creation of sustainable infrastructure.
