SongTaba is a coalition committed to the realization of the aspirations and rights of women and children, especially girls, in the north-eastern part of Ghana. The coalition comprises of 25 organisations including NGOs, government agencies and individuals who share a vision of a violence-free and just society where women and girls as well as people with disability enjoy their fundamental rights.
SongTaba’s mission is to work with poor women and girls in identifying the root causes of their impoverishment and addressing them in a rights-based manner. SongTaba draws strength from its membership and their diverse capacities in lobbying, advocacy and addressing violations of women and girls’ rights in its operational areas.
The coalition works in facilitating women and girls’ participation in decision making by empowering and encouraging them to take up leadership positions in their communities, schools and local assemblies. The other key issues SongTaba works on are violence against women and girls in schools and communities themes as well as economic empowerment of women.
SongTaba’s strategy is hinged on three organisational structures that facilitate community-district-regional level engagements. The structures include district gender forums, SongTaba Council, a SongTaba Board of Directors and a Secretariat. This organisational arrangement enhances mutual accountabilities and facilitates downward accountability to community groups.
SongTaba’s key strategies include
• Participatory analysis and awareness creation
• Strengthening capacities through resource and information provision
• Addressing immediate needs
• Advocacy and campaigns
• Using research to provide alternatives
This seeks to find funding for our various interventions to bring sustainable solutions to these problems confronting the poor women and children more importantly .
