We are members of the Maxwell Citizen’s Education Learning Community at Syracuse University. This year we began working with John Dau, a Lost Boy of Sudan, to raise money to build a health clinic in Sudan.

The Sudan Project

For those who are unfamiliar with the story of the lost boys, in 1987 government troops from the Northern Regions of Sudan were seeking to convert or kill all males in the South. The boys fled from John’s region of southern Sudan to Ethiopia, back to Sudan and then to a refugee camp in Kenya in 1994. During this journey of more than 1,000 miles and many years in refugee camps, the boys suffered through violence and starvation. At times the boys had no choice other than to eat mud in order to keep their throats moist.
Many of the Lost Boys eventually escaped to the United States. John Dau was one of those boys, and has lived in Syracuse, New York since. He brought his sister and mother from Sudan as well as his fiancé whom he hopes to marry soon. While working 60 hours a week as a security guard, he completed his Associates Degree at Onondaga Community College and is pursuing a degree at Syracuse University in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
John wants to help the Sudanese people who still live in a world of violence and hatred. He wants to raise money to build a clinic that will replace the current health facilities, which are merely crowded tents. This Spring, a documentary on the Lost Boys featuring John Dau will premiere. The documentary, “God Grew Tired of Us,” will help to inform the public of the issues that still face Sudan.
We think this is a very important cause and admire John for his devotion to helping others. By donating to this cause you are helping thousands of children and families, who are in desperate need of higher quality health treatment.
